Artificial Whiteness: Politics And Ideology In Artificial Intelligence 🔍

Columbia University Press, 1st Edition, 2020

Yarden Katz 🔍

descrição

Dramatic statements about the promise and peril of artificial intelligence for humanity abound, as an industry of experts claims that AI is poised to reshape nearly every sphere of life. Who profits from the idea that the age of AI has arrived? Why do ideas of AI’s transformative potential keep reappearing in social and political discourse, and how are they linked to broader political agendas? Yarden Katz reveals the ideology embedded in the concept of artificial intelligence, contending that it both serves and mimics the logic of white supremacy. He demonstrates that understandings of AI, as a field and a technology, have shifted dramatically over time based on the needs of its funders and the professional class that formed around it. From its origins in the Cold War military-industrial complex through its present-day Silicon Valley proselytizers and eager policy analysts, AI has never been simply a technical project enabled by larger data and better computing. Drawing on intimate familiarity with the field and its practices, Katz instead asks us to see how AI reinforces models of knowledge that assume white male superiority and an imperialist worldview. Only by seeing the connection between artificial intelligence and whiteness can we prioritize alternatives to the conception of AI as an all-encompassing technological force. Bringing together theories of whiteness and race in the humanities and social sciences with a deep understanding of the history and practice of science and computing, Artificial Whiteness is an incisive, urgent critique of the uses of AI as a political tool to uphold social hierarchies.

Artificial Whiteness: Politics And Ideology In Artificial Intelligence (2024)

FAQs

What is the ideology of artificial intelligence? ›

As ideology, AI makes us forget not only the very real and abject working conditions of the real Marxist proletariat, involved in the transformation of nature into products and surplus value but also the symbiotic relation that humanity has with nature generally.

What does AI mean in politics? ›

Artificial intelligence (AI) has a range of uses in government. It can be used to further public policy objectives (in areas such as emergency services, health and welfare), as well as assist the public to interact with the government (through the use of virtual assistants, for example).

What is controversial about artificial intelligence? ›

Often, controversies in AI relevant to participation lead to ex-post attempts to fix problems that AI applications cause. These include concerns around bias, privacy, value alignment, safety, existential risk, workforce disruption, and de-skilling.

What is the main argument against AI? ›

Lack of emotion and creativity

The next disadvantage of AI is that it lacks the human ability to use emotion and creativity in decisions. The lack of creativity means AI can't create new solutions to problems or excel in any overly artistic field.

Which philosopher is against AI? ›

Hubert Dreyfus was a critic of artificial intelligence research. In a series of papers and books, including Alchemy and AI (1965), What Computers Can't Do (1972; 1979; 1992) and Mind over Machine (1986), he presented a pessimistic assessment of AI's progress and a critique of the philosophical foundations of the field.

Will AI replace the government? ›

That means it's possible the federal government will soon have fewer employees. But AI will never replace human judgment — about benefits, penalties or anything in between. It's a tool to be used by Americans to make better decisions for our national well-being.

How will AI affect humans? ›

Over-dependence on Technology

As society becomes increasingly reliant on AI, there is a growing risk of technological dependence. This dependence can reduce human skills and capabilities as individuals and organizations rely more on automated systems for decision-making and problem-solving.

How is the US government using AI? ›

The federal government is leveraging AI to better serve the public across a wide array of use cases, including in healthcare, transportation, the environment, and benefits delivery.

What is a bad fact about AI? ›

AI and deep learning models can be difficult to understand, even for those who work directly with the technology. This leads to a lack of transparency for how and why AI comes to its conclusions, creating a lack of explanation for what data AI algorithms use, or why they may make biased or unsafe decisions.

Will AI ever be unbiased? ›

Today, AI excels at making unconscious bias data obvious, but that isn't the same as eliminating it. It's up to human beings to pay attention to bias and enlist AI to help avoid it.

What is the main idea of artificial intelligence? ›

Artificial intelligence is the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines, especially computer systems. Examples of AI applications include expert systems, natural language processing (NLP), speech recognition and machine vision.

What is the main philosophy of artificial intelligence? ›

The main concerns in the philosophy of AI are the nature of consciousness and the ethical implications of AI. The potential impact on society and employment, the limits of computational systems, and the possibility of achieving human-level intelligence are also the main concerns.

What is the main concept of artificial intelligence? ›

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a set of technologies that enable computers to perform a variety of advanced functions, including the ability to see, understand and translate spoken and written language, analyze data, make recommendations, and more.

What is the idea of artificial intelligence? ›

Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to computer systems capable of performing complex tasks that historically only a human could do, such as reasoning, making decisions, or solving problems.
