Retention matters - for internationally educated health workers (IEHW), just as for those trained in Canada. Some factors are important to everyone, but there are also specific considerations for IEHWs. Drawing on the latest research, workers' lived experience, and the experience of policy-makers and system leaders, participants in a recent policy lab identified 8 important factors to consider:- Include workers' voices in decision-making- Streamline licensure and accreditation processes that uphold high standards for safety, quality and readiness to practice- Develop anti-racist and anti-oppressive policies and procedures- Provide mentorship and supervision supports- Develop onboarding and human resource supports- Provide settlement support and navigation services (community and employer)- Connect to community supports (e.g. family, financial, mental health andwellness)- Develop rural and remote support and trainingFor more information, read the full report at the link below.

This podcast pulls back the curtain on the processes and thinking behind agreements between the federal and provincial/territorial governments on healthcare. It starts with a look back at recent bilaterals, then transitions to lessons learned and how this approach might - or might not - serve us well in the future from a federal perspective. If you're interested in big picture health policy in Canada, it's an interesting listen.

New from Statistics Canada: There are 8-14 year gaps in life expectancy between neighbourhoods* in Canada's largest cities, gaps that are in some cases wider than those in US.The authors also looked at what might explain these gaps on the two sides of the border. In the US, there's a strong relationship between income and life expectancy. In Canada, that's true but less strong. The authors say that we may need to explore other factors such as the distribution of public schools and other local services to explain their findings.Read the study: https://lnkd.in/e_JPjmDk* As measured by census tracts in Canada; within counties with large cities in the US.

This seemingly smooth upward trend for FPs/GPs hides a lot.As we think about how to advance the various improvements we'd like to see in healthcare, we can, of course, learn from pilot projects that haven't advanced or other innovations that got stuck. But there's at least as much - maybe more - that we can learn from areas like this one where changes at scale have taken place.Early FP/GP adopters lifted rates to about 30%. Adoption programs with change support accelerated the next stage of growth. Take 2013, which is about the middle of this graph. Provinces/territories with programs in place before 2011 had 72%+ adoption rates in 2013. Those who launched later had rates of 35% or lower at that time.Interested in delving deeper? How can healthcare partner effectively with patients and communities, even during crises? A new issue of Healthcare Papers starts from the premise that the COVID-19 pandemic revealed the fragility of health and social care systems, including their patient-, caregiver-, and community engagement. Authors explore how some settings bucked this trend - sustaining and growing engagement practices even during the pandemic.Congrats to everyone involved in compiling and sharing these important reflections, including Kerry Kuluski, Carol Fancott, Maggie Keresteci, MA, CHE, and Ross Baker who wrote the lead paper in this issue!Read the papers: https://lnkd.in/evG4cmZ5

To change healthcare, focus on fixing systems not people, argue Dr. Kedar Mate, Josh Clark, and Jeff Salvon-Harman, MD, CPE, CPPS in their recent HBR article. What does this look like? In the article, they identify seven features of health systems that take up this challenge. One that I've been thinking a lot about lately is the fourth they list: seeing safety, equity, and experience as inter-related, not silos. What got us here won't get us to where we need to go.
